Stay cool, get close and comfortable with the waves at URBNSURF park this Summer
This Summer is set to be a hot one and one way you can escape the heat is by embracing and having fun with some waves at URBNSURF. There is also something so meditative about getting close to the waves, so it’s a great way to destress over the holidays too.
URBNSURF is a surfing park in a beach-like environment but without the sand, and where you don’t have to deal with the unknowns or risks of the open ocean and whether there are going to be good waves.
Whether you’re curious about surfing, looking for a new water adventure, or a seasoned surfer looking to hone your surfing skills in a safe environment, at URBNSURF, just arrive with your swimsuit and you’re all set for some surfing fun, in a welcoming, friendly and relaxed environment.
Open from early morning to 9pm every night, or until 10pm during Summer, this makes it a great post-dinner activity on those balmy Summer days. But there’s much more here than just surfing for a fun day out.
You can even get your surfing moments snapped by the team and purchase it online after your experience to look back on.
Pre-arrival
It’s worth going online to see the array of classes available and that may best suit you. If unsure, contact the customer service team who will be able to guide you.
A waiver form and safety video will be sent to you to watch to help make your experience as smooth as possible.
If you are thinking about the weather, even if you visit on a milder day, the water isn’t too cold and your wetsuits certainly keep you warm.
Which session or lesson?
If you are surfing for the very first time, the Beginner class is most suitable.
The lessons go up to Expert, in which the waves rise to 2 metres.
Which session or lesson to book?
Going with young children
The minimum age for children to participate in any session or lesson here is 6 years old. If you are going with young children, I would highly recommend taking a class yourself first to become familiarised with the environment and how the waves work at the park. Young kids will always require adult supervision, called a “buddy” at arm’s length, and it can be a lot to manage if you are trying to get used to the conditions yourself while assisting your child against the oncoming waves and keeping them safe.
After the first lesson, there’s the option to continue with more lessons next time. Otherwise, there is an opportunity to practice your skills in more casual, playful sessions in The Bays section, closest to the shore, where the waves are smaller and the water is shallower. You will still be able to catch 10-12 waves in an hour.
Boog in the Bay: An ideal area for early learners to get used to how the waves work and if they are still learning to stand up on the board. They can start catching and riding the waves by lying on the board and bodyboard riding the waves. It’s a chance to perfect positioning on the board to ride the wave to shore.
Surf in the Bay: A great area for those who have just started to get up on their board, to practice riding the waves on smaller waves to start with.
Prices: For either of these sessions, tickets are $40 for kids up to 13 years of age. Adults $45 or they can join as a buddy for $30.
Swim in the Bay: This is a great session available for swimming and the chance to boogie board or surfing.
Prices: $20 for adults, $15 for children for a 2-hour swim pass.
Seasoned surfers
There are many lessons and sessions for expert surfers to ride guaranteed big waves.
Preparing upon arrival
Upon arrival, head to the Surf Rentals desk where the staff will ask for your sizing and pass you a wetsuit. The changerooms are close by and once all suited up, you can get head to the Surf Academy next door to meet for your session, in which you will be provided a safety briefing and a lesson on land, about how to position yourself on the board and how to get up on the board.
The experience
Then it’s time to head in! The waves roll in intervals and their sizes are suited to your class level.
Your instructor will help guide you through to know when to start paddling as the waves approach from behind, getting up onto the board through to how you can ride the wave.
As someone who is not a fan of chlorinated water, it was a pleasant surprise to find these waters are not heavily chlorinated.
Post surf activities
After your session, you will see how surfing can keep you fit, with wading through the water and against the weight of the waves, and getting up onto the surfboard while engaging your core, which is key to helping you to balance on the surfboard.
After or in between sessions, you might like to have a soak in the hot tubs to relax your muscles. Open from 6am until 9pm or 10pm during the Summer, this means you have plenty of time to catch a pre-work surf or an evening surf before or after dinner.
You’ll be glad to know that delicious food is just a short stroll away, at the conveniently located onsite Three Blue Ducks restaurant, where you can also enjoy a coffee or beer at while you watch the waves and surfers. If you’re lucky, you will catch a lovely sunset or the sight of a plane flying out of or into Tullamarine airport close by.
The surf park also has many lawn areas to lie on, or on the daybeds and relax lagoon side.
URBNSURF has all the ingredients for a great day out with clean and well-equipped changeroom facilities.
Tips for your visit
Not surfing, just watching?
For those who opt to not go into the water, you can purchase a Spectator Pass, which from $5, (free for children aged 0-5) gives you access to the hot tub and if you end up getting tempted to go into the water for a surf or play, they will credit the value of the pass towards the lesson or session you decide to go with.
Learn about surfing and waves beforehand
It might help to equip yourself with some knowledge about waves, surfing and beach safety to complement your experience such as at Surf Life Saving Australia, which also includes a specific educational kids series called Beach Passport featuring Kangaroo Beach.
