Top Tips for Dressing Your Baby

There top tips are brought to you by Precious April

Who doesn’t love dressing their baby in cute little outfits to head out for coffee or to the park? Simply pop on an outfit or a onesie and off you go. Easy, right? But what if it rains? What if they are too cold? Too hot? What if they have a poo explosion? How many layers should they wear?

Dressing a baby is not always so easy. There are actually a few factors to think about, so we have put together some top tips for dressing your baby.

Be prepared

Babies can tear through clothing fairly quickly. One smelly vomit and a giant poop and that is the end of your spare sets of clothes. Always be mindful of how long you might be out of the house for and keep one spare set for morning, afternoon and dinner (for example) plus a lightweight jumpsuit in the car - just in case!

Always be sure to check your clothing stocks when you get home and re-pack anything that might have needed a wash before you head out again, or simply grab a new set of spares from the drawer.

Check the weather

Melbourne is notorious for its unpredictable weather, so always have a back up plan when it comes to your children’s clothing. Keep a cardigan or jacket, plus a wooly hat, spare socks and blanket close by for a dip in the temperature, or t-shirts, shorts and sun hat on hand for those times the mercury soars.

It is always handy to keep a spare set of seasonal clothing in the car or in your bag, plus a few appropriate items for those unpredictable days, such as hats or raincoats.

Choose some classic, timeless pieces of clothing to mix and match

Bright clothing is certainly beautiful, but you might also think about choosing some classic, neutral colours and pastels to add a more timeless style to your little one. You don’t have to go overboard - just a few key pieces to mix and match so that they have a stunning outfit, ready to go.

Think about layers

The rule of thumb for layers is generally to dress your baby in the same number of layers you are wearing, plus one. Typically you can add another if they were born premature or if it is particularly cold. Singlets are a handy item of clothing to wear under bedtime onesies in the cooler weather, while a stylish cardigan is always a great addition to an outfit as the sun starts to go down and the evening gets a bit chillier.

Make life easy for yourself at bedtime

Opt for bedtime outfits with zips and minimal press studs for easy access when you need to change a nappy or give your baby a feed at 3am.

Try to avoid overly complex onesies with lots of press studs - choose clothing with zippers or clothing that is easy to get on and off instead and you will thank yourself that you did in those early hours of the morning.
