Explore the Royal Botanical Garden's in Cranbourne, aka the Australian Garden

The Royal Botanic Gardens is not limited to the CBD. There is another garden landscape, ready for you to explore, some 45 minutes from the city centre.

The Royal Botanical Gardens in Cranbourne otherwise known as (and sign posted as) the Australian Garden, is a contemporary landscape, showing off some of the best of the country's flora.

Grass trees in the Australian Garden

The gardens here are vast and varied, with water play for warmer months, a small nature inspired tube slide and smallish play area (predominantly used for kinder and primary school excursions) and plenty of space for kids to run around.

We visited on a week day and found the gardens to be relatively quiet and peaceful. After a quick stop for a milkshake for Mr.4 and hot beverage for me, we spent a good 1 1/2 hours exploring the gardens.

I should add that the cafe offers magnificent views over the gardens and is a great place to either begin or end your self-guided tour.

Speaking of tours, you can join organised guided walking tours or explore the gardens on board the Garden Explorer, which will bus you around the 15 hectare garden if you wish. Walking and bus tours incur a little cost, whereas entrance into the gardens otherwise is free.
