It was 2 am that I woke to find my water had broken I was 37 weeks pregnant. Muddled over what was happening, I second-guessed whether this was the moment. After a quick telephone conversation with a nurse, it was confirmed. It was time.
My bag was ready to go and sitting by the doorway. At that moment I remember feeling relief for being well prepared and grateful that only a few last-minute efforts would see me bundled into the car to begin a 50-minute ride to the nearest hospital.
Arrived, my mind was free to concentrate on the moment and thankfully relieved of minor worries. My daughter’s birth was the most significant event in my life, a flurry of emotions but mostly resounding joy. The experience presented me with two weeks in hospital before returning home. During this time I faced both fear, self-doubt but also joy, happiness and power, because I was equipped with everything I needed for a comfortable and simplified stay.
