How to make the most of your time at the Drive-in with kids

A visit to the Drive-in to catch the latest movie blockbuster is a must for families. The experience itself is priceless, although you will also save money if you compare the costs of taking your family to your local mainstream cinema.

At the time of writing, the cost of a car load to see a movie at the Lunar Drive-in, Dandenong is just $30.

If you are considering a visit to the Drive-in with your family, follow these tips to make the most out of your experience:

Arrive early. Understandably, visiting the Lunar Drive-in is a popular past time, but it is not possible to pre-book your spot. As such, if you want to choose the best spot for your car, arrive at least 15 minutes before the gates open and wait in-line.

Dress the kids in their PJs before you leave home. Movies at the Drive-in start when the sun sets. In the summertime, this will be around 8.30pm and also means your chosen film will not finish until late into the night. Therefore your kiddos will likely be tired, quite possibly asleep, before you arrive home. If they're in their PJs already, that's a win.

Take warm blankets/clothes Even in the summertime, there are nights when the temperatures drop. Be prepared for this and take extra blankets and pillows for comfort.

Take insect repellent Being that you are outside in the elements, and it is sunset when the movie starts, mosquitoes are likely out be out too. Take insect repellent and spray yourselves to avoid getting bitten.

BYO snacks Seems like an obvious one but if you want to save a bit of cash and avoid queues for food, take your own snacks with you. The Lunar Drive-in cafe/diner offers the usual eats expected at the cinema, along with hot dogs and more, but there are a number of people who buy rather than BYO so you can expect a bit of a wait to order.

Dress the kids in appropriate footwear. This applies if the weather has been a little wet because at the start of the movie, kids tend to run around in the grass underneath the big cinema screen. Great for the adults who can watch from afar and great for the kids to meet and play with others. However, the grass areas can get a little muddy, so if the appropriate footwear is not worn, expect your kids to get mucky. Gumboots would be best when attending on a particularly wet day.

There you have it. Our tips to make the most of your time at the Drive-in with your kids. Do you have any more tips you'd like to add?
