Outdoor Cinemas in Melbourne this Summer

Warm nights and bright evenings mean Melbourne families can enjoy their favourite indoor endeavours in the great outdoors.

Family movies usually reserved for the cinema and the comfort of your couch can be enjoyed under the stars this summer, thanks outdoor cinema pop-ups found in the city and scattered throughout suburbia.

We give you a list of the best Outdoor Cinema set-ups to enjoy a family-friendly classic or new blockbuster movie in the open air this summer:

* The Sunset Cinema Melbourne at Gasworks Arts Park

The Sunset Cinema Melbourne


For a limited time, Gasworks Arts Park hosts the Sunset Cinema Melbourne. Enjoy the 'stars under the stars' until 13 January 2018.

Family-friendly movies include: Goodbye Christopher Robin, Wonder & Daddy's Home 2.

* Barkly Square Openair Cinema

An eclectic mix of family-friendly, arthouse and modern favourites. Kid-friendly movies include: Elf, Despicable Me 3.

All ticket sales will be donated to a different charity each week.

* Moonlit Cinema at Royal Botanic Gardens

Melbourne’s Moonlight Cinema is back this summer, located on the Central Lawn at Melbourne Gardens (Royal Botanic Gardens, Victoria).

Family-friendly movies in January include: Nut Job 2, Ferdinand, Wonder, Jumanji, Back to the Future. More movies added to the program in February.

Where: Royal Botanic Gardens, Birdwood Ave, South Yarra. (Enter the venue via Gate D on Birdwood Avenue (near the intersection of Domain Road) and follow the path to the Central Lawn.)

* Lido on the Roof

Lido Cinemas in Hawthorn offers a classic, blockbuster and arthouse movies.

The iconic cinema opens up it's rooftop in the summertime, offering an exciting 'Lido on the Roof' program.

Enjoy family-friendly cult classics as well as new blockbusters such as: Labyrinth (and celebrate Bowie's birthday with a dress-up on the night), Nut Job 2, The Lion King, Peter Rabbit, Early Man, Mystery Men, Isle of Dogs.

* Cameo Cinemas: Outdoor Cinema

Lido's sister cinema in Belgrave the Cameo Cinemas will host an Outdoor Cinema program this summer.

Enjoy family favourites The Goonies (with a treasure hunt included), Labyrinth (dress-ups encouraged), The Lion King (BYO Pet!) and new movie blockbusters Nut Job 2 & Mystery Men.
