Family Ice Skating Fun in Docklands

The O'Brien Group Arena, just a short drive or tram stop away from Melbourne's CBD, is a huge ice skating rink offering fun for all ages on a recreational basis.

Although this particular ice rink is the centre of ice sports in Victoria, hosting ice hockey tournaments to figure skating, curling and speed skating, O'Brien Group Arena is also open for public skating sessions.

Recently, my sons and I took to the ice at Melbourne's central ice skating rink, which happened to be our first ever family ice skating experience!

There is a range of ice skates available for hire at O'Brien Group Arena, even for the tiniest of feet.

Now, ice skating is not a particularly easy technique to master for a little one, so we took the opportunity to hire an ice seal for Mr.4 to sit on. For an extra $5 hire cost (for 1/2 hour), this is worth every cent. Not only do the seals give little children a chance to enjoy the ice without hurting themselves, but these little ride-on animals give parents and older children the chance to hold onto something while pushing toddlers along. Win win!

Beginners are advised to wear helmets at O'Brien Group Arena, because accidents can happen.

The temperature of the ice centre is set at a frosty 16 degrees Celsius, so warm clothing is advised too. We were fine with jumpers and hats, but we did notice others wearing jackets. Go prepared.

Ice skating tickets start from $14 for 3 - 5yrs, $23 for 6 - 14 years, $25 student rate and $27 adult. These costs include skate hire, you save money if you have your own. Family passes also work out cheaper.

Alternatively, head down to O'Brien Group Arena on a Tuesday for "Tight Tuesday" rates: $9 for 3-5yrs, $11 for children and adult, including skate hire. Note that "Tight Tuesday" rates are not valid on public or school holidays.
