The O'Brien Group Arena, just a short drive or tram stop away from Melbourne's CBD, is a huge ice skating rink offering fun for all ages on a recreational basis.
O'Brien Group Arena
Although this particular ice rink is the centre of ice sports in Victoria, hosting ice hockey tournaments to figure skating, curling and speed skating, O'Brien Group Arena is also open for public skating sessions.
Recently, my sons and I took to the ice at Melbourne's central ice skating rink, which happened to be our first ever family ice skating experience!
There is a range of ice skates available for hire at O'Brien Group Arena, even for the tiniest of feet.
Now, ice skating is not a particularly easy technique to master for a little one, so we took the opportunity to hire an ice seal for Mr.4 to sit on. For an extra $5 hire cost (for 1/2 hour), this is worth every cent. Not only do the seals give little children a chance to enjoy the ice without hurting themselves, but these little ride-on animals give parents and older children the chance to hold onto something while pushing toddlers along. Win win!

Beginners are advised to wear helmets at O'Brien Group Arena, because accidents can happen.
Join in on the NEW Art of Beer tour of Melbourne, which will cover the city's relationship with beer, its history and the best places to drink and enjoy beer.
The temperature of the ice centre is set at a frosty 16 degrees Celsius, so warm clothing is advised too. We were fine with jumpers and hats, but we did notice others wearing jackets. Go prepared.
