Workshops to Inspire Teens


For parents of teens who are glued to their screens, the National Communication Museum has workshops that turn passive interests into creative pursuits. Designed to engage and challenge young minds, these interactive programs provide skills and experiences to inspire future careers or creative outlets. Click on the links below to make a booking!

  • Introduction to the Art of 3D Printing | 15 January (Ages 10–16): Teens can design and print their own 3D models while learning the fundamentals of 3D printing.

  • Become a Podcast Star | 16 January (Ages 14–18): Participants storyboard, record, and edit their own podcast in the museum’s brand-new, cutting-edge studio, with equipment provided by museum partner Audio-Technica

  • Video Game Design | 22 January (Ages 14–18): This workshop introduces students to game ideation, storyboarding, and the basics of Unity software - no coding experience required.

  • Sound of the Future | 24 January (All Ages): Led by music producer Davey "Dizz1" Norris, this workshop explores songwriting and electronic music production using Ableton.

  • Held in state-of-the-art facilities and led by experienced mentors, these hands-on programs offer an unforgettable experience for young people of all skill levels. Limited spots are available and early bookings are advised.

    Engaging Activities for Younger Kids
    The museum's Kids Hub is a vibrant, hands-on space where younger visitors can learn and play. Activities include exploring Braille, experimenting with pixel art, coding and even making calls on rotary phones - sure to delight and educate in equal measure.

    Something for Everyone
    Families visiting the museum will find plenty to explore together, from nostalgic displays for parents to interactive exhibits for children. Highlights include:

  • The fascinating story of George the Speaking Clock, once an essential part of everyday life for Australians.

  • A fully functioning Cyber Cafe showcases 1990s internet culture, allowing you to step back in time. Play iconic games like Doom and SkiFree, chat on MSN Messenger, or get creative with MS Paint.

  • The thought-provoking Instruments of Surveillance exhibition, which examines modern monitoring technology in an engaging way.

  • The museum is housed in a historic Telstra exchange building, blending old-world charm with cutting-edge exhibits.

    Located in Hawthorn, the National Communication Museum is open during the school holidays from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays).
