I am sure I speak on behalf of most parents when I say that we want nothing more than the best for our kids, particularly when it comes to making the leap from kinder to ‘big school’.

With the trend in Victoria veering towards more and more people holding their children back before they start school, it’s always hard to know what to do and to know what is best for your child as everyone has their own opinion.

Of course, we don’t want our children to all be the same personality wise, but certainly academically wise – yes. So what can we, as parents, do to ensure that our kids are school ready?

We all know that most children learn better from others rather than us. Kinder is a large part of the school readiness journey for 3 and 4 year olds. However, for some children a kinder setting may not bring out the best in them for reasons known only to the child.

This is where the likes of school readiness and tutoring classes at establishments like Begin Bright Doncaster are a great alternative.

Run by trained primary school teacher, Kathy Campbell, Begin Bright Doncaster’s goal is to ensure that all kids who attend their school readiness courses leave happier, smarter and more confident.

Melbourne Mums Group asked Kathy Campbell to tell us more about their programs. She says: “Children can start Begin Bright classes at 2 years of age with a craft and music focused lesson, then progress into School Readiness Class at 3 for the two years before school, then move on into the primary tutoring program.”

Kathy adds: ”The main aim of early learning is to ensure that children have the best head start and have acquired all the skills necessary for “big school’. From previous students now at school, our program has proven to improve children’s learning skills and put them straight to the head of the class.”

I recently took Mr 4.5 along for a trial class to find out more about what Begin Bright was all about. As with anything, a parent is guided by the child’s response to know whether something is a success. Admittedly, Mr 4.5 was reluctant for me to leave to start with but no sooner had I gone he got into it.

He even surprised himself as to what he knew as far as letters and numbers go. He came out puff chested and very pleased with himself. That to me was enough proof that this approach can work.
