Be Comfortable in Your Own Skin: Turn Parent-Shaming to 'Parent Faming' with Huggies

by BecSorby (follow)
Parents under attack: New research reveals over 70% of Aussie mums and dads admit parent-shaming is worse than ever and on the rise.

Have you ever been parent-shamed? The answer is probably yes, with new researching revealing a whopping 5.8 million Australian parents have been shamed for their parenting approach. 20% have experienced judgement on a weekly basis.

Whether it’s breast vs. bottle, co-sleeping vs. sleep training, working vs. stay at home mums…there are a myriad of things we can be made to feel ashamed of - usually by other mums!

‘Be Comfortable in Your Own Skin’ is a new campaign by Huggies that is encouraging parents to not only stop shaming each other, but for you, as parents, to trust yourself that you are doing things the right way for you and your baby.

NO-ONE knows your baby or child the way you do….

If in doubt, be reassured by the ones who matter most…watch now below.

Huggies is rallying to put an end to parent-shaming, so all mums and dads can Be Comfortable In Their Skin.

With the new research identifying a number of key points regarding the rise of parent-shaming and increased judgement, the campaign celebrates all parenting styles and aims to ‘parent fame’, not parent shame.

The research found that:

More than one in three who have been shamed admitted to questioning their own abilities as a parent and two in five women have experienced increased anxiety levels
Mums tend to take the criticism of parent shaming to heart more than dads
The rise of social media takes its toll, with nearly eight in 10 saying online forums provide a platform for easy parent-shaming
Parents of newborns are hit the hardest, with parent shaming most prevalent during the first two years.

Psychologist Sabina Read says: "Parent-shaming is a having a concerning impact on parents with many suffering from mental health issues as a result.

"We see that mums are typically quicker to criticise themselves and take comments to heart, often devastating their confidence as a parent. Sadly, this can even have a knock-on effect on children who feel their parents’ anxieties.

"We need to be more conscious of how we treat parents when they’re most vulnerable. Taking a stand on the issue is the first step to champion all parents."

So with good intent and thinking before we speak, let’s make a stand on parent-shaming by faming not shaming. It’s time we lifted parents up, instead of putting them down?

Together we will fame, not shame!

No matter how you parent, as long as your bub is happy and healthy, you can be 'Comfortable in your Skin', and let Huggies deliver the best care and comfort for your baby's skin.
