Why go to Bali when there are so many more amazing international destinations to explore ex Melbourne?

Ask most Melburnians where they are flying off to for their annual family holiday and the majority will join the mass Australian migration by jaunting off to Bali.

According to traveller.com.au Australians have been the number one source of foreign visitors to Bali since 2017, and Bali welcomed 4.6 million visitors in 2016.

Bali is a firm favourite for many reasons; it's relatively cheap, the weather is great, there are nice restaurants to enjoy and an interesting culture to explore.

That said, as nice as Bali is, surely there are more global destinations worth considering for Melbourne families? Indeed there are and here we profile four fabulous international family destinations that are not Bali!

1. Vanuatu

Once voted the 'happiest place on earth' according to the World Happiness Report, Vanuatu is a tropical gem.

Only a 3 to 4 hour flight time from the East Coast of Australia (departing out of Brisbane or Sydney) and 1 to 2 hour time difference (depending on daylight savings) Vanuatu is a wonderful family holiday destination.

Urban tap water in Port Vila (the capital of Vanuatu) is perfectly safe to drink. You can visit a volcano, take a boat trip out to a turtle sanctuary, swim in natural waterfalls and swim in the warm waters of the Pacific.

Many hotel resorts in Vanuatu offer kids clubs, and most restaurants are child-friendly.

Put Vanuatu on your family holiday 'must-visit' list. You won't regret it. For more information about Vanuatu head to www.discovervanuatu.com.au

2. Singapore

Singapore aka the 'Lion City' has so much to offer holidaying Aussie families.

Singapore

Flight times are around 7 to 8 hours from Melbourne although once you are there, the time difference is just 2 hours so you won't need to worry about jet lag.

Singapore's year-round balmy weather means you can jet off to the warmth at any given time. Enjoy the family playground that is Sentosa Island, home to Universal Studios, KidZania, S.E.A Aquarium, Adventure Cove Waterpark, Skyline Luge, Siloso Beach and the Port of Lost Wonder!

Most will agree that Singapore's food offerings are plentiful, varied and extremely affordable. Undoubtedly one of, if not the cleanest city in Asia, why not eat street food in one of the many Hawkers Markets around the city.

Other highlights include the Singapore Zoo and Gardens by the Bay.

3. Hawaii

Aloha! The furthest destination in our fabulous international family holiday hot spot list is Hawaii. If you don't mind the 11 plus hour flight time and can handle a little jet lag, you must put the home of the Hawaiian shirt on your radar!

Hawaii

The US state of Hawaii consists of eight main islands, and offers a blend of American and Polynesian culture.

The main destination you are no doubt familiar with is Honolulu on the island of Oahu, with plenty of opportunities to shop, eat and sun bake on Waikiki beach.

Alternatively, holiday with your kids off the beaten track on The Big Island, Maui or Kauai.

Back on Oahu, visit the historical battle site of Pearl Harbour and the USS Arizona Memorial or the Polynesian Cultural Center to immerse yourselves in traditional history.

Alternatively, head to one of the many beautiful beaches or state parks and imagine yourselves on the set of one of the Jurassic movies.

4. Malaysia

Often overshadowed by it's popular Asian cousin Thailand, there is something for everyone in Malaysia.

Vanuatu
Malaysia

Flight times to Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur from Melbourne? Around 8 hours. The time difference between Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur is only 2 hours.

Kuala Lumpur is a cosmopolitan city, with huge air conditioned shopping malls, nice restaurants, theme parks, zoos and an aquarium.

For traditional and natural beauty, head to the Batu Caves, just 20 minutes from Kuala Lumpur. This popular site is home to a limestone hill with a series of caves and a beautiful temple.

If you're after a beach holiday, head to Langkawi in Malaysia (1 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur); a tropical island gem surrounded by an emerald sea.

Other family friendly activities in Langkawi include tours to the mangroves, a visit to the Oriental Village, ATV adventures, water sports and more.

Malaysia has something to suit most budgets and is an international family holiday destination without the crowds you usually find in Thailand or Bali.
