The is a quirky little annual gathering that takes place in the Town of 1770, Queensland—yep, it's literally the only number on the map in Australia. It's all about honouring the historic landing of Lt James Cook and his merry crew aboard the HMB Endeavour back on 24 May 1770, when they decided that the East Coast shores were just too pretty to pass up. Here, they met the local Gooreng Gooreng people before sailing off on their next big adventure (which, spoiler alert, leads to Cook becoming Captain Cook). Each May, folks gather to chat about Cook's exploration shenanigans, his impressive knack for maps, and all the things he jotted down about the land and its First Peoples.
Since its debut in 1992, the festival has been a collaborative affair, with native custodians, the Gooreng Gooreng, helping to shape the celebration and share their culture with everyone. It's a beautiful blend of past and present, bringing together locals and visitors for some good old-fashioned camaraderie while paying homage to historic "Encounters in Country." So, get ready for a splash of colour and a whole lot of fun in the laid-back coastal town of Agnes Water and Town of 1770, the perfect launchpad for adventures like the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Mark your calendars for May 23 to 25, 2025, because this festival is bound to be a blast.
