Lake Mountain

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is around 2 hours drive from Melbourne CBD. The journey to Lake Mountain is scenic, taking a drive through the beautiful Yarra Valley and on through the giant town of Marysville.

From Marysville, the Lake Mountain Alpine resort is a further 30 minutes drive through windy tree lined roads.

At Lake Mountain you can enjoy snow play and tobogganing, snow shoeing, winter walks and skiing.

Mount Baw Baw

Mount Baw Baw is an all round resort, offering the closest downhill skiing to Melbourne during winter months.

From Melbourne CBD, Mount Baw Baw is approximately 2h45 to 3 hour drive, and is a mountain situated in the Great Dividing Range.

Activities at Mount Baw Baw include snow play, tobogganing, snow shoeing, husky led sled tours, cross county skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding.

Stay overnight in the Alpine Hotel or enjoy a refreshment at the Bistro.

"Can recommend Mt Baw Baw as it is easy to get to if you live in the south/south east." MMG Member.

Resort entry at the time of writing: $56.

Mount Donna Buang

Mt Donna Buang is located in the Yarra Valley, overlooking Warburton in Victoria. It is approximately 1.5 hour drive from Melbourne CBD, which makes this mountain 'resort' of the closest, and can easily be reached on a day trip. The best part is, there are no car fees to get to Mt Donna Buang, so you are looking at a day trip with the lowest costs!

The term 'resort' is used quite loosely because Mount Donna Buang has no cafes or clothing shops so you need to bring everything with you, including food. There are toilets and BBQs plus a heated shelter if you need to keep warm.

That said, on predicted snow days, a food van and toboggan hire truck usually turn up.

Do check for the weather conditions before you commit to your day trip, because snow isn't always guaranteed.

Where: Donna Buang Road, Warburton, VIC

Bear in mind this article is dedicated to the best day trips to the snow from Melbourne, so while there are plenty of other options such as Mount Buller, Mount Hotham, and Falls Creek, you are looking at a journey of between 3.5 - 5 hours each way, which would consider the aforementioned resorts more of an overnight stay.
