Adopt A Family This Christmas

Adopt A Family is a Melbourne, volunteer-based initiative, that each year partners with Hanover. This community agency provides a range of services to Victorians experiencing housing crisis or homelessness.

Their purpose is to provide these families with that magical, special Christmas spirit, that so many of us take for granted.

Christmas is meant to be the 'most wonderful time of the year', but for some, it is a hard reminder of how little they have, and a feeling of sadness that they can't spoil their children as much as they would like to.

In 2011, their founding year, 10 families were adopted. Last year there was 300, and in 2016, over 500 families will be supported.

Many of these families inlcude are women and children who have fled from domestic violence, while some leave with only their clothes on their backs.

In order for Adopt A Family to bring joy to these families, they rely on the generosity of local families who donate gifts, food and essentials to a nominated family. These are then hand-delivered by their support worker, ensuring that these kind gestures go to needy families.

If you would like to help, you can send an email to adoptafamily@mail.com, and they will then provide you with details of the family you will be helping.
They will provide you with their age and gender, and it is up to you what you buy.

By adopting a family, it is such a great way to teach your children the spirit of Christmas, while instilling empathy and understanding of less fortunate families.

It is sure to add warmth to your Christmas morning, knowing that your adopted family will be excitedly opening the presents that you have chosen for them, filling them with a joy that otherwise, they would not have.
